Fire Focus: Multiple Car Fires Keep FD Busy

Madison Fire Department urges safety during grilling season.

April 10, 6:53 p.m.:  The Madison Fire Department was notified of a possible car fire on Knollwood Avenue. While responding, fire units were advised the car was located on Hillview Avenue near Hamilton Street. Arriving fire personnel encountered a fully involved car fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. One firefighter suffered a minor hand injury.

April 12 6:01 p.m.: Madison firefighters were called to assist Florham Park firefighters with a condominium fire. When Madison firefighters arrived, one crew began to search the units of the fire building to ensure all occupants were evacuated and another crew assisted with extinguishing the fire. Madison firefighters remained on scene and performed various tasks and assignments. Fire personnel were on scene for approximately two hours.

April 23 8:47 a.m.: The fire department was dispatched to a report of a smoke detector sounding from a tenant in an upstairs apartment in a Walnut Street house.  Arriving firefighters found a smoke detector beeping and noted a burning odor.  Fire personnel opened a window and unlocked a door to the first floor apartment.  Once inside, they found a smoke condition and began to search for the source of the burning. Firefighters found papers smoldering in a dish on a credenza in an office area of the apartment. The material was removed from the apartment and extinguished. The fire is currently under investigation. The fire also led to an arrest.

April 23 3:21 p.m.: Firefighters were dispatched to a reported car fire in the rear of the apartments on 17 Madison Ave. Arriving fire personnel found a fully involved car fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and prevented any extension to the surrounding garages. The fire remains under investigation.

April 30 8:56 p.m.: The department was notified of a possible brush fire in the rear of a home on Pomeroy Road. Upon arrival, firefighters found a small fire around an outdoor fire pit. The homeowner used gasoline to light the fire in the pit and it spread to the surrounding bushes. The homeowner began to extinguish the fire prior to the firefighters' arrival and then fire personnel finished the process.

The fire department assisted the ambulance corps with 30 medical calls this month.
