Fire Department Honors Former Chief

McCormack purchased the borough's first aerial platform truck and was known for his smile.

The held a ceremony this past Sunday honoring late former chief Jim McCormack.

McCormack was chief of the department from 1975 to 1985. During that time, he purchased the department's first aerial platform truck, as well as presided over the 100th anniversary celebration. 

A plaque created in his honor says "Jim was known for his ready smile and helpfulness to all."

McCormack's widow, Maggie, was at the ceremony and got a first-hand look at the plaque. About 60 people, including 20 firemen, attended the ceremony. 

McCormack, who passed away on Feb. 28, 2008, was born in Astoria, Queens in New York City and was a WWII Navy combat veteran. He joined the fire department in 1953.
