Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Charges for Chatham Man

Police make arrests for DWI, outstanding warrants.

A Chatham man was allegedly found in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia following a motor vehicle stop last week on Park Avenue.

On Feb. 5 at approximately 1:23 a.m., Patrolman Sean Plumstead arrested Stephen Quinn, 29, of Chatham, and charged him with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Plumstead initially stopped Quinn on Park Avenue for burned-out lights and determined that he was in possession of marijuana. Quinn was transported to headquarters for processing and released pending a mandatory court appearance. Quinn was also issued a motor vehicle summons for failure to maintain lamps on a vehicle.

Also on Feb. 5 at approximately 3:08 a.m., Sgt. Peter Iossa arrested Rostin Brown, 40, of East Orange, and charged him with driving under the influence. Iossa initially stopped Brown on Route 24 for a motor vehicle violation. He determined that he was allegedly operating his vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Brown was transported to headquarters for processing. During processing Iossa determined that Brown was allegedly providing a false name and date of birth, and added charges of hindering apprehension. Brown was released to a friend pending a mandatory court appearance. He was also issued a motor vehicle summonses for failure to maintain a lane, and driving with a suspended driver’s license.

On Feb. 5 at about 3:44 a.m., Patrolman Sean McCarthy arrested Marcelino Vega, 22, of Newark, on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in Madison Municipal Court. McCarthy was contacted by the Hillsborough Police Department who had Vega in custody. Vega was taken to Morris County Correctional Facility in lieu of bail pending a mandatory court appearance.

On Feb. 6 at approximately 11:41 p.m., Plumstead arrested Corey Lewis, 31, of Irvington, on three outstanding warrants issued by Newark Municipal Court, Old Bridge Municipal Court, and Clifton Municipal Court. Plumstead initially stopped Lewis on Route 24 for burned-out lights. A computer check revealed the active arrest warrants. Lewis was taken to police headquarters for processing. After processing he was released to the authorities of Clifton pending a mandatory court appearance in all three courts. Lewis was also issued summonses for failure to maintain lamps on a vehicle; driving with a suspended driver’s license, and consumption of an alcoholic beverage while operating a motor vehicle.

The Madison Police Department, Fire Department and Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to 27 medical emergencies during the week.

Police investigated 18 motor vehicle crashes during the week.
