Drew Student Fell From Dorm Window

Police say he was sitting up and alert when they arrived.

A male Drew University student was brought to Morristown Memorial Hospital on after falling from a third-story window in Haselton Hall, Madison Police confirmed.

Officials with the Madison Volunteer Ambulance Corps said the call occurred late Friday night into Saturday morning, around 2:30 a.m.

Lt. Darren Dachisen of the Madison Police Department said officers saw the student was sitting up on the ground, with a screen laying near him, when they arrived. Police said it appeared as though the student had minor injuries, though they couldn't tell anything further until he was transported to the hospital.

The Madison Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported the student to Morristown Memorial. Dachisen said he could not release the student's name. Police said they smelled alcohol on the the student's breath.

Drew University Chief Communications Officer David Muha said the student was enrolled at the university, but he could not comment on if he was on campus for summer session or any other university-related activity.

Muha also said that his knowledge of the dorms goes back 20 years, and that in that time there have been no similar incidents. He said the university is investigating the incident.

"We want to understand what happened and how it happened," Muha said. "What were the circumstances surrounding the fall? If something needs to be done with regard to student safety, we want to do it. But we need to understand better what happened. And that's ongoing."
