Girl, 5, Who Battled Brain Tumor Dies

Brooke Healey inspired fundraisers throughout the Madison community.

Brooke Healey, a 5-year-old girl whose battle with a rare brain tumor inspired fundraisers throughout the Madison community, died Monday morning, her family said.

Brooke, the daughter of Madison teacher and coach Steve Healey, lived in New Providence.

Steve Healey and his wife, Stefani, shared regular updates about Brooke's condition in an online journal, including posts about recent complications from a virus. A post Monday morning said Brooke had died and "Stef and I were holding her at her last breath."

Family friends, current and former students, coworkers and businesses in Madison helped organize fundraisers and shows of support for Brooke and her family since Brooke's diagnosis in January, including bracelet sales, bowling outings and an event at the Madison Community Pool. They were among many fundraising efforts throughout the region.

Healey, a teacher and coach in Madison for more than a decade, has said the support was amazing.
