Field Upgrades, Athlete Exemptions, Sustainable Lawns This Week

Borough Council: Madison's governing body is scheduled to meet 8 p.m. Monday in Hartley Dodge Memorial. Little League field improvements is one discussion item. A public hearing and vote on an ordinance appropriating $165,000 from the electric capital improvement fund for a new digger/derrick truck also is on the agenda.

Board of Education: Madison High School’s administrative team and curriculum committee will present during the school board's Tuesday meeting their findings and research on high school athletes being exempt from physical education and health courses. The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Madison High School library.

The approval of the retirement at the end of June of Central Avenue School Principal Philip Kennedy, with thanks for his years of service, also is on the agenda.

Gallup Poll President Book Discussion: The Rotary Club of Madison and Drew University present an evening with Dr. Frank Newport, editor-in-chief and president, Gallup Poll, to discuss his new book, "God Is Alive and Well: The Future of Religion in America."  8 p.m. Wednesday at Drew University. Black Maria Film Festival: Three artists behind the new short film "Bartleby," including the artistic director of Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey, who appears in the film, will be on hand for a post-viewing talkback session when the Black Maria Film and Video Festival makes a stop at the Madison Public Library on Friday, March 1.

The adaptation of Herman Melville’s "Bartleby the Scrivener" is one of the short films that will be shown during the festival tour stop. The event is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday in the library's Chase Room. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Sustainable Lawns: Madison Environmental Commission and Recreation Advisory Committee co-­sponsor a free workshop on “Sustainable Lawns: Work Smarter for a Healthier Lawn,” 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 2 in the Chase Room at the Madison Public Library.

Budget Hearing: Madison's governing body is scheduled to hold a special public meeting on the borough budget at 10 a.m. Saturday in Hartley Dodge Memorial.
