St. Hubert's Takes In Dogs From Tornado-Struck South

49 animals are available for adoption after being moved north following April storms.

Dozens of dogs are available for adoption after being moved from shelters following the tornadoes that devastated Southeastern states in April.

Forty-nine dogs from storm-wracked areas of Georgia were transported by the  American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and arrived at St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison on May 9.

The dogs had been up for adoption  prior to the storms that struck April 25-28. St. Hubert's said that shelters in Georgia's Catoosa County needed that space to hold the large number of animals displaced by the disaster and to allow more time to reunite owners with their pets.

Madison also received dogs from shelters in Jasper and Beaufort Counties in South Carolina which had been assisting the Georgia shelters. A total of 37 animals were then transferred to partnering agencies Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown; Animal Alliance in Lambertville; Noah's Ark Animal Welfare Association in Ledgewood; Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter in East Hanover; Rawhide Rescue in New Jersey, and Rondout Valley Animals for Adoption in Accord, N.Y.

St. Hubert’s staff and volunteers turned out early Monday morning to help with the new arrivals.

The dogs range in age from a few months to a few years and are of different sizes and breeds. All have had rabies and distemper vaccinations. Some will be available for adoption within the week, St. Hubert's said, depending on vaccination or other needs.

"This is a collaborative effort and all of our hearts go out to the tornado victims" said St. Hubert's President Heather Cammisa. "We are all glad to help these animals and to help provide time for people to reunite with their pets, people who may have lost everything else."
