Pulitzer-Winning Poet, School Board Reorg This Week

A look at the week ahead in the Rose City.

Board of Ed Reorganization: The Madison school board is scheduled to hold its reorganization meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Madison High School, with returning board members Lisa Ellis, Kevin Blair and Linda Gilbert taking the oath of office.

Madison Youth Softball Signups: Registration for the 2013 season is open through the end of the month.

Thursday Morning Club: The Thursday Morning Club will welcome the New Year with “Virgins to Viragoes: Images of Women in Victorian Painting” presented by club member Dr. Terry Kidner, following the club’s general meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Madison Community House. Kidner’s program will offer both a chronological and thematic history of the ways in which women were imagined in Victorian art.   

Yusef Komunyakaa Poetry Reading and Speak Peace Exhibition: Readings by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and Vietnam War correspondent Yusef Komunyakaa and acclaimed Lebanese poet and translator Khaled Mattawa are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Concert Hall of the Dorothy Young Center for the Arts at Drew University. An art exhibition, "Speak Peace: American Voices Respond to Vietnamese Children’s Paintings," is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Korn Gallery of the arts center. The event is free.

Christmas Trees: The Department of Public Works will be accepting Madison residents' Christmas trees for recycling from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12.

New Library Hours: The Madison Public Library opens an hour earlier on Sundays, from 1 to 5 p.m.
