Police Chief Selection Law, H.S. Stairs on Tap in Boro

A look at the week ahead in Madison.

Borough Council Meeting: Madison's governing body is expected to introduce an ordinance at its Monday meeting to establish procedures for promoting the chief of the Madison Police Department, according to the meeting agenda.

The public portion of the meeting starts at 8 p.m. at Hartley Dodge Memorial.

The item is listed for introduction as Ordinance 24-2012, "Ordinance of the Borough of Madison Supplementing Chapter 34, of the Code of the Borough of Madison Entitled 'Police Department,' Establishing a Promotion Procedure for the Rank of Police Chief and a Procedure for Acting Appointments."

Last month, the Madison Borough Council , and said a permanent chief will be decided through a formal process to be outlined in an ordinance. The process would include oral and written exams and a psychological evaluation, with the tests administered by the New Jersey State Chiefs of Police Association, and the ordinance would detail who is eligible for consideration, they said at the time.

Also at the meeting, public hearings and final votes are scheduled on ordinances appropriating funds for improvements to Samson Avenue and the North Street, Candlewood and Treadwell pump stations, and for increasing zoning permit application fees.

Officials have said governing body will discuss the and the in executive session.

Garbage Pickup: The borough returns to once a week garbage pickup starting Monday. Residents can call 973-593-3088 with questions.

Water Work: The Madison Water Department fire hydrant and water main flushing program begins Monday and will last about six weeks. During this period residents' water may experience a loss of pressure and slight discoloration for a short period of time. If residents experience any other problems they can call the Madison Water Department at 973-593-3092.

Board of Education: The public portion of the Madison school board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the library. According to the agenda, the Board of Education could act on a recommendation from the superintendent to authorize Parette Somjen Architects to submit drawings and documents to the Department of Education for the design of exterior concrete stairs at the high school. The board president has said the district plans to have stairs installed that run from the weightroom to the football field.

The architect's paperwork for the project would serve as an application to the office of School Facilities and as amendment to the district's Long Range Facility's Plan, according to the proposed resolution. The project would be funded through the district's general fund, it says.

Votes on approving field trips and faculty appointments, including Gary Adair as a physical education and health teacher and Christelle Monawar as a French teacher, both at Madison Junior School, also are on the agenda.
