Madison's Memorial Day Parade, Ceremonies Set

Events begin at 9 a.m. Monday.

Madison’s Memorial Day events are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Monday with wreath-laying ceremonies at the borough's war memorials in James Park, on Madison Avenue, and at Condurso Park, at Main Street and Park Avenue, according to James Kemp, chair of the borough's Patriotic Celebrations Committee.

Then, a parade down Main Street begins at 9:30 a.m. and is followed by a remembrance ceremony at the municipal building at 10:30 a.m.

The list of Madison war dead will be read at the remembrance ceremony, as well as the winning essay from this year’s Thursday Morning Club essay contest for sixth-graders, Kemp said.

The grand marshal of the parade will be William DeAngelis of Florham Park, a decorated World War II veteran who served with honor in the European theater with the 6th Armored Infantry Division, from the Normandy landing through the Battle of the Bulge, Kemp said.

DeAngelis earned the Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone as part of a five-man team that rescued a group of American soldiers held behind enemy lines, and ge received the Purple Heart for combat wounds received during the Battle of the Bulge. The Madison High School graduate operated a real estate office on Main Street in Madison until his retirement.
