What does the Drew University Women’s Lacrosse Team and Bruno Mars have in common?
Both will be appearing at the halftime show on Sunday at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium during Superbowl XLVIII.
Because of a confidentiality agreement, few details could be given out about the actual half-time performance, but Head Coach Julia Steier confirmed that 20 of the 21 members off the Drew Women’s Lacrosse Team would be on the field during the half-time show.
“Everybody was so excited,” said Steier. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance.”
The team, which has its season opener against Montclair State University on Feb. 27 has already been to a rehearsal for the half-time show, but are prohibited from talking about the details – even to their parents.
“They know how special it is,” said Steier, who added that the team was chosen through an application process and will appear with other members of the half-time field audience, which includes students from Seton Hall University, but to Steier’s knowledge, no other entire team of college athletes.
Steier said she could not disclose what the lacrosse players would be wearing during the half-time show, but added they were not allowed to appear in their lacrosse uniforms from Drew.
Word about the appearance began to leak out on campus Friday.
“The Athletic Department is honored that one of our sports teams was selected to attend the Superbowl half-time show,” said Vincent Masco, Associate Athetic Director. “We think it’s a great opportunity for them.”
The players are part of the Landmark Conference and Steier said the 21-person team is smaller than some of its competitors – which includes Stevens Institute of Technology and Fairleigh Dickinson University. But that hasn’t stopped the team members from rubbing it in, good-naturedly, to the other athletes on Drew’s campus that they are the ONLY Drew sports team to be invited to appear in the Superbowl half-time show.
“They’re going to treasure that,” said Masco, adding that hundreds of people are expected to be on the field during the half-time portion. “We hope we get a chance to see some of them.”
