Too many banks and too many chain pharmacies. This is just absolutely superfluous. There are 2 CVS in Chatham, 1 CVS in Florham Park, and a Walgreens in Florham Park. Not to mention the supermarkets with pharamacy departments. I agree with the guy who said they should have put a bakery there!! I'll still give all my business to Madison Pharmacy - I'm sticking with the local guy !!

Super-pharmacies are springing up everywhere like weeds—the eyesores de jour.

Bakeries are great, no question. And if someone could operate a bakery cafe in Madison profitably, it certainly would happen - that's how the free marketplace works. Particularly bakery cafes - those are fun - as long as somebody else owns and operates it. But bakeries are a tough business - long hours, hard work and very little money to show for it. If I even thought twice about going down that road, my grandfather's spirit would swoop down from heaven and smack me upside the head with all the force he could muster. He toiled in a bakery his entire life - he would never wish that life upon anyone.

It's settled then.... Steve T and I will go in 50/50 on a new town Bakery cafe. He'll take mornings and I've got evenings. We can work out some of the other details as we go along. You'll probably want my real name before committing to it of course, but for now my photo will have to do

not only do we not need another pharmacy/store. We do not want a 24 hr one. A bakery would be great, or even a Panera Bread. Alanta Bread is lousy.

Slip - I don't think a business partnership between us would work out. Recall that I rechristened you "Slip Mahonian" last year and made you an honorary member of my tribe. So that would mean two Armenian guys trying to run a business together. Why the heck would I trust you at the register with your well-known sticky fingers? I know your kind all too well! All kidding aside, I'd love to see a new bakery in town.
Slip March 16, 2012 at 05:56 PM
Ah, maybe your right, even as a pseudo member of the tribe, I don't know if it will work. But even so, I wouldn't worry too much about me behind a register, or even with most of the baked goods for that matter... as long as I'm not working behind a bar I'm fairly trustworthy

I am pleased to see Madison attract investment dollars and a significant retailer. That corner has been an eyesore and an embarrassment for years. Thanks to the people taking the risk and having the vision to improve this area as well as increasing the much needed tax ratable in our town

Any word if it will be 24/7?
Barb March 16, 2012 at 07:59 PM
Wow that building reminds me of Manchester not Madison.
Steve T. March 16, 2012 at 08:00 PM
7 most likely; 24 hour not allowed by municipal code.
Jake Remaly (Editor) March 16, 2012 at 08:04 PM
Mary, as of now, they have not submitted an application to be open 24/7. They would need to request and receive special approvals from one of the land use boards to do that. I left a message at the number on the sign to see if I can find out more, including whether that is still in the plans.

For those of you who are unaware Steve Tombalakian heads up the Madison Planning Board. He is very astute, loves Madison and worked hard to secure a proper tenant for the old Exxon site. The site carries restrictions from Exxon due to contaminated soil which has been remediated. It will definitely not be opened 24 hours a day.
Steve T. March 16, 2012 at 08:53 PM
Truer words have never been spoken - thanks Jerry!
Stephen McCann March 16, 2012 at 11:09 PM
Agreed, the Planning Board is to be commended for working with the Developer to make it happen, kudos to all !
Madison Station March 17, 2012 at 04:35 PM
I have mixed feelings about it being open 24/7 (if they apply for it). On the one hand, it would be very convenient to be able to run downtown and pick up supplies at 2:30 am, when Stop and Shop is closed and Quick Check is... well Quick Check. On the other hand, it does invite increased activity to the town late at night, which could bring more crime. I also would not want to live next to a 24/7 business.

Also, any clue why they cleaned out the back part of the lot? Do they plan on making that a large parking lot or another building? The property is misleading in size, the parts in the picture are only 1/3 the size of the property. It extends into the "core" of that residential block backyards, which used to be woods. They cleared that all out, so I'm wondering what their intentions are for development.
Steve T. March 17, 2012 at 05:25 PM
Parking lot and landscaping. The primary entrance to the building will face that rear parking lot.
Madison Station March 17, 2012 at 09:37 PM
Thanks for the information. That will be a large parking area, but nicely tucked away from street view.

What about jobs? There are a lot of teens who need jobs right now, I think it would be awesome and helpful for Walgreens to hire some of the high-school and college kids. I've been looking for months for a job for weekdays or late hours....
