Madison Walgreens Aims to Open Friday

Pharmacy chain could open this week if all of its permits are in place.

The signage is up, the clock is in, and the Madison Walgreens is aiming to open Friday morning if all of the necessary permits are in place.

Construction of the two-story office-retail building, called Gateway to Madison, started in March.

Plans call for the property at Main Street and Greenwood Avenue to have retail tenants on the first floor and office tenants on the second floor.

The application for the project at 122 Main Street gave some officials pause when they learned in 2010 Walgreens was a possible tenant and the store planned on seeking permission to stay open 24 hours a day. The borough later passed a law that

I still think it is way to close to the road, and cars and trucks and suv's going in and out of the parking lot ,is going to cause alot of traffic jams, and accidents. It is a mess waiting to happen..

whats the difference if its close to the road or not ..... no matter where you pull in and out of its the same distance leaving the lot pulling into the road

If we didn't allow development due to any potential increase in traffic, then we'd be in an economically dying town with old gas stations that need remediation, no funds to clean up the mess, and a vacant lot that is bringing a very small amount of tax revenue. Walgreens is a solid addition to Madison, much like Staples is. Who cares if there are extra vehicles on the road - it's Main Street. We should welcome it.

I worry about which other retail establishments they may force out of business. I hope our other merchants can stay competitive.

Visited Walgreens yesterday and found it very disturbing that the store's front end (behind large check-out counter) was dominated by a large and colorful display of cigarettes. Everyone who makes a purchase is exposed to this display. It a focal point of this store. As a health conscious consumer, parent and member of the health care community, I find this irresponsible. There is a good reason why cigarette ads are no longer permitted on TV or other media. Walgreens has managed to create its own larger than life advertisement in this store. I called the manager to express my concern. Hope others will join me.
