A Madison student's Eagle Scout project to convert more than a mile of the Madison Recreation Center's terrain into passive recreation trails recently earned him the state's GreenFest Award.

Joseph Falco III, a Madison High senior and member of Troop 25, received the award in the "individual-high school" category last month at Kean University.

A group of 25 cadets from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., and 40 fellow Madison Boy Scout Troop 25 members helped Falco convert the wooded area into mulch pathways, according to the Madison Eagle.

Falco also used the Smithsonian Institute's website, Leafsnap, which provides information about trees along the paths through a type of bar code that visitors can scan with their smartphones.

Falco also designed an aluminum trailhead sign that honors the history of Fairleigh Dickinson University's "Florham" mansion.
