Relay for Life Expected to Draw Hundreds to Madison High

Eighth annual overnight event begins at 4 p.m. Saturday.

More than 300 participants and over 20 teams will come together to raise funds for cancer research at the American Cancer Society’s eighth annual Relay for Life of Madison/Florham Park on Saturday at Madison High School. 

The event will also honor cancer survivors and their caregivers, and pay tribute to those who lost their battles with the disease. Relay for Life isanovernight celebration in whichindividuals, teams, families, students, and groups of co-workers get together, dance to the music of popular local bands, taketurns circling a track relay style, and participate in a host of other scheduled activities.     

On-Site Registration

Registration and camp setup begins at 4 p.m. All are welcome. For those not yet registered, on-site registration is available for $15 per person. Cancer survivors are especially encouraged to attend.

Vendor Fair

From 4 to 8 p.m., several local vendors will promote and sell their products and services. The businesses include: Mary Kay; Bookmarks; Pottery; Jewelry; Secret Garden; The Glass Torch; Pink Zebra; My 31; Origami Owl; Green Apple; Massage Envy; Joint Care Physical Therapy; Primrose School of Florham Park; and Fimo Products.

Opening Ceremony

At 6 p.m., guest speaker Donna Cooke, of Florham Park, will talk about her experience with cancer. The national anthem will be performed by Florham Park resident Brooke Shanley. Madison Boy Scout Troop No. 25 will hold the American flag.

Food and Beverages

The snack shack, hosted by the Madison Fire Department, will be open from 4 to 10 p.m., as will an Italian ice truck (weather permitting). A variety of dinner, snack, and drink options will be available for sale.

Opening Lap

Cancer survivors and their care providers are invited to celebrate their triumph over cancer by participating in an inspirational We Are Family Lap to officially open the relay at 6:15 p.m.

Survivor Dinner

Thanks to the generosity of local vendors, survivors and their care providers will dine on a variety of foods and drinks starting at 6:30 p.m. During the dinner, Grace Church’s Gargoyles, a young men’s a cappella ensemble directed by Dr. Anne Matlack, and Daughters of Zion, a local girl’s a cappella ensemble, will perform.

Luminaria Ceremony

At 9 p.m., the track will be lined with luminaria for a ceremony honoring cancer survivors, as well as paying tribute to those lost to the disease.

Fitness Activities

Throughout the night, several sports and wellness activities will take place, including: Theme laps; Scavenger hunt sponsored by Maria’s Team of Hope; unofficial 5K run; Frozen T-shirt contest and Twister sponsored by Kelly’s Angels; Wiffle Ball game sponsored by Maria’s Team of Hope; Pound Workout hosted by certified Master Pound instructor Melissa Towey; Hip Hop for kids under 12 hosted by dance instructor Danielle Delvescovo; Dancing by Dance with Danielle; Zumba hosted by licensed instructor Andrea Pleckaitis, certified Zumba instructor; and Yoga hosted by Lori Whittaker, certified Yoga instructor.

Entertainment

Between 4 and 10 p.m., live music will be provided by local bands: Jeff Webb; Dairy Farmers; Kings Road; Rosewood; Gargoyles; and Daughters of Zion. Starting at 10:00 pm, Dr. D, a disc jockey, will play popular music during the overnight event. Various fundraising activities are planned, such as face painting from 5 to 8 p.m. by Danielle Glancey of Danielle’s Designs; and Games and contests hosted by Let’s Hear It For The Boys.

Closing Ceremony

A special closing ceremony is scheduled for 6 a.m. on Sunday. Caitlin Udall, Staff Partner for the American Cancer Society, Eastern Division, will announce the top fundraising individual and team.

So far, the 2014 Relay for Life of Madison/Florham Park has raised an estimated $33,000 with a short time to go before relay.
