Green Forum, Sandy Relief Party, Pancakes This Week

A look at what's going on this week in the Rose City.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day: No school for Madison students Monday for the holiday. Teachers have an in-service. The First Baptist Church of Madison will host its annual Poor Man's Lunch and MLK Birthday service at the church starting at noon. Lunch, which will consist of beans, cornbread and salad, will be served in the Harriet Sheldon Fellowship Hall at noon. The program will follow immediately in the church sanctuary. The Rev. Teresa Lynn Rushdan, pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Madison, is the speaker.

Board of Education: Updates on assessment data and the district's technology are on the agenda for the next school board meeting, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Madison High School. The board meets in closed, executive session at 5:30 p.m., an hour earlier than usual.

Green Forum: "A community-wide discussion of a sustainable Madison" is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Ehinger Center at Drew University. Topics include getting around Madison, greening the home and business, natural spaces, and alternative energy. Sponsored by the Sustainable Madison Committee with the Madison Environmental Commission, Open Space, Recreation and Historical Preservation Committee, Parks Advisory Committee, and Shade Tree Management Board.

Sandy Relief Party: Madison residents wearing clothes from their favorite beach towns are invited to a fundraiser in the gym of St. Vincent Martyr Church from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday for an event that will raise money for the Union Beach Disaster Relief Fund. The event will include a cash bar, light fare, and live music by Jumping the Gun and House Rockers.

Concert: The Masterwork Chorus presents Mozart’s Requiem and Songs of Rest at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dorothy Young Center for the Arts, Drew University. Tickets are $40.

Pancakes: Eat pancakes and support the Marching Dodgers. $6 at the Madison Elks Lodge, 9 a.m. till noon, Sunday.

Yoga: Studio Yoga Open House is scheduled for noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. There will be a variety of free mini-classes, including Zumba, Pilates, and Tai Chi, and performances for children, teens, and adults. The highlight of the day will be a belly dance performance.
