Fresh Mulch, Public Art Beautify Downtown

May Day in Madison saw hundreds of volunteers sprucing up the borough and the debut of a sidewalk art gallery.

Under sunny skies, hundreds of volunteers picked up litter, spread mulch and pulled weeds during May Day in Madison on Saturday.

The 16th annual community beautification effort coincided with the debut of the Madison Sidewalk Gallery, an initiative of the Downtown Development Commission and Madison Arts and Culture Alliance.

Raking mulch on a ledge at the Madison Train Station, Mayor Bob Conley said the aroma of fresh mulch—some of which was ground from trees that fell during Superstorm Sandy—is a sign spring is here.

Eric Range, chair of the DDC, thanked volunteers and said the sidewalk art gallery adds one more new and exciting reason to visit downtown.
