Annual Yom HaShoah Commemoration
The Drew University Center for Holocaust/Genocide Study is pleased to present its Annual Yom HaShoah (Day of Remembrance) Program on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Baldwin Gymnasium. The program will feature the documentary film, René and I, which tells the story of René and Renate Guttman, a twin brother and sister, who spent more than a year in Auschwitz. Separated in the camp, Renate, the sister was subjected to medical experimentation by the notorious Dr. Josef Mengele. René and Renate who were eight years old when they were liberated from Auschwitz in 1945 were finally reunited five years later in 1950.
The film, René and I, tells the story of the Guttman family’s arrest in Czechoslovakia, their experiences first in Terezin and then in Auschwitz, the separation of René and Renate and their subsequent search for each other post-war. In addition to a story about the Nazi racial state and the Holocaust, it is also a story of love and courage, of the complexity of the human psyche and the resilience of the human spirit. The film screening will be followed by a Q & A session with Irene Hizme (nee Renate Guttman) and Leora Kahn, the film’s executive producer.
The Center, which is non-profit and self-supporting, invites membership and donations. This year’s Yom HaShoah program is underwritten by Joyce E. Reilly, Center Associate, in honor of Ani Szekely Kühlewind of Budapest, Hungary; the Jacqueline Berke Program Fund; and the New Jersey Commission for Holocaust Education.
