Madison Restaurants, Bars Celebrating St. Patrick's Day

Whether you're in the mood for a plate of corned beef and cabbage or a glass of green beer, Madison has plenty to offer on Wednesday.

If you're looking for a full St. Patrick's Day meal experience this year, Madison has you covered—from breakfast all the way to dessert. Start the day off right at Bagel Chateau with a green bagel for breakfast. What to put on top? Scallion cream cheese, of course. (Green bagels cost 80 cents each, $9.60 for a dozen, and can be pre-ordered at 973-301-9888.) Stop by Rocco's Tuscany Bar and Grill for lunch—the restaurant is offering a St. Patrick's Day menu featuring shepherd's pie, Irish stew O'Gallagher, fish and chips, and corned beef and cabbage, all of which is served with Irish soda bread. Green beer and draft specials will also be available, so if you're not above drinking at noon (and what good Irishman or woman isn't?), then bottoms…

Hearty Appetites Encouraged for Taste of Madison

In its ninth year, event will be hosted at Fairleigh Dickenson on Monday.

Over 30 restaurants are participating in this year's edition of Taste of Madison, which will be held on Monday night from 7 - 9 in the Ferguson Recreation Center at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Those attending the event, which is in its ninth year, will be able to sample signature dishes from the participating borough restuarants. Four local wine shops will offer wines and spirits to go with the meals. Other treats, like tricky trays and a silent auction, will be held for items, some of which are valued at $1,000 or more.  "This gives [the restaurants] good exposure: visitors try a new restaurant and dish all in one night," said Carmella Moeller, a Co-chair for the event. According to Moeller, the Taste of Madison event, which draws …

Close to Closing, Silken Wool Here to Stay in Madison

Silken Wool, a store specializing in Persian rugs, is staying open due to a renewed lease—and pressure from loyal customers.

Silken Wool, a high-end store selling Persian rugs, home furnishings, and gifts, recently put up signs announcing that it was closing. However, due to lease negotiations resulting in a renewed lease, the store is now staying open. Located at 6 Green Village Rd., Silken Wool has been open in Madison for three and a half years. The owners, Bruce and Sussan Ghorbanian, were able to renegotiate the lease with their landlord, allowing them to stay on. "When we put up the sign saying we were closing, people flooded in, telling us how beautiful the store was and asking us not to close," said Bruce Ghorbanian. "Our customers were so sad, it just broke our hearts. One lady came in, hugged me and said, 'This store has to stay open.'" The community's…

Organic Co-op Brings Madison Members Closer to Food

Purple Dragon—a co-op that emphasizes the importance of organic, sustainable living—supplies its members with seasonal produce while supporting local farmers.

Five years ago, Evelyn Cucchiara saw an ad in a newspaper for an organic fruit and vegetable co-op called Purple Dragon. "I thought it sounded perfect, so I joined," she said. The idea behind the co-op is a group of people buying food together and sharing the labor involved in order to save money, while gaining access to fresh, and in most cases, local produce, thereby supporting local farmers. Now Cucchiara is a site manager for the Madison pod of Purple Dragon, which means she keeps all fifteen members in the loop about deliveries, assigns sorting duties, and organizes pickups twice a month. Site managers are not paid, but they get a $40 discount on each delivery. "Once you have it up and running, it's really easy," she said. "And the …

New Mama C's Subs Fueled by Pair of Friends

A new sub shop offering memorable specials—like a 99 cent meatball slider—had its grand opening last week.

Mama C's Subs, located at 143 Main St., opened its doors to hungry patrons March 1. Every Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., the shop serves breakfast platters, sandwiches, and fajitas—think eggs, bacon, and cheese in a soft tortilla—as well as standard lunchtime fare such as subs, paninis, wraps, salads, a soup of the day, and a variety of baked goods. Everything is homemade. Michael Caminiti and David Colonnello are partners and co-owners of the new business, which was formerly Fat Boys Subs. Colonnello previously ran a landscaping business and Caminiti is a trained chef who owned an Italian restaurant for 30 years in Staten Island, N.Y. "We decided to open in Madison because the people here are so nice. I became acclimated …

D Torr a Hometown Dream Come True

Madison resident's boutique sells women's clothes and accessories.

Madison residents have a new destination for women's clothes: 36 Main St., new home of D Torr. "It's not the stuff you see in the mall," said owner Danielle Torrani. "It's a little more personal." D Torr stocks women's clothing and accessories, and carries brands like Soda Shoes, Classique and Staccato. No two trips to D Torr are quite the same, since Torrani rotates stock weekly or bi-weekly, so new items are always on display. "It's great, there's so much to look at," said customer Shira Rost of Summit. "I love all the accessories." Torrani, a graduate of Madison High School class of 2004, said she's always wanted to open a clothing store. A year in corporate marketing made her realize a nine-to-five was not for her, so she decided to …

Local Antique Store Shutting its Doors

Wooden Horse Antiques, owned by Madison couple Chris and Phil Nilsen, will be closing at the end of the month due to low sales.

Wooden Horse Antiques, located at 12 Park Ave., will be closing its doors at the end of this month, after being open for a year and a half.  Owned by husband and wife Chris and Phil Nilsen, the store sells antique furniture, glass, porcelain, pottery, art and jewelry. "Wooden Horse is closing because unfortunately there was not enough traffic to warrant staying open," says Chris Nilsen. "It just wasn't practical." Although she and her husband will continue to sell antiques at their online store, rubylane.com, she says they will miss the Madison store: "It's so nice having face-to-face contact with people, and you obviously don't get that selling online. We'll miss that a lot. We loved the business and are sad to go." All remaining items in…
