Youth Track & Field Caps Undefeated Run With Season-Best Performances

Madison athletes step to the fore at Morris County Championships.

In the 40th Annual Morris County Youth Track & Field Championships on June 12, the Madison Youth Track & Field team capped an undefeated regular season by finishing in third place with 221 points, the second-highest Championship Meet total in the team’s 29-year history.
Leading the way for Madison with two individual Morris County Championships was Laurel Carey. Capturing one individual title each Helene Rowland, Connor Riley, Quinn Heyrich, Sawyer Tadano, and Michael Quinn.

13-14 Year Old Girls

Helene Rowland finished off a record-setting Youth Track “career” with an impressive toss of 32 feet to win the shot put.

Jaime Sheppard finished third in the 400 meters and fourth in the 800 meters; Libby Johnson was third in the mile and fifth in the 800 meters, and Emily Fritze placed second in the mile and fourth in the long jump.

13-14 Boys

Connor Riley galloped to the “gold” to win the mile in 5:28.82. Quinn Heyrich dashed to victory in the 400 meters in a season-best 59.24.
 
Madison’s County Place Winners were Connor Riley, third in the 800 meters; Andre Catao, sixth in the 800 meters and 400 meters; Quinn Heyrich, second in the 200 meters and long jump; Denny Harrington, fourth in the shot put; Denny Harrington, Quinn Heyrich, Dylan Sharon, and Andre Catao combined for fifth in the 4x100 relay.

11-12 Girls

Madison’s County Place Winners were: Catherine Renz, second in the 800 meters and third in the 200 meters; Sophia Sherman, second in the 100 meters and 400 meters; Isabelle Rojas, third in the 400 meters and fourth in the 100 meters; Meaghan Hanley, fourth in the mile; Meg Armstrong, fifth in the mile; Beatrice Stadler, fourth in the shot put and fifth in the 200 meters; Tiana Smith, third in the shot put; Isabel Brownlee, fifth in the long jump; Casey Carr; sixth in the long jump. Isabelle Rojas, Isabel Brownlee, Sophia Sherman, and Catherine Renz picked up a second in the 4x100 relay.


11-12 Boys

Sawyer Tadano glided to first place in the 800 meters in a spectacular 2:28.99. Michael Quinn sprinted to the county championship in the 400 meters in a speedy 1:06.03.

Madison’s County Place Winners were: Noah Wilde, fifth in the 800 meters and the mile; Sawyer Tadano, fourth in the 100 meters and sixth in the long jump; Will McCann, fifth in the 400 meters and sixth in the 200 meters; Michael Quinn, second in the 200 meters; Griffin Heyrich, second in the shot put; Stephen Mantone, sixth in the shot put; Aidan Carter, Michael Quinn, Will McCann, and Sawyer Tadano took third in the 4x100 relay.

9-10 Girls

Laurel Carey broke the Madison program record in winning the 800 meters, then took to the “field” and captured first place in the long jump.

Madison’s County Place Winners were: Alex Graddy, fourth in the 100 meters and fifth in the 200 meters; Gracee Palmer, second in the mile and fourth in the 200 meters and long jump; Allegra Colavita, fourth in the mile; Laurel Carey, second in the 400 meters; Elle Cantor, fifth in the shot put; Allegra Colavita, Alex Graddy, Maddie McDole, and Laurel Carey combined for second in the 4x100 relay.

9-10 Boys

Madison’s County Place Winners were: Bram Carter, fourth in the shot put and sixth in the 800 meters, and Raphael Stadler, fifth in the long jump.

In all, there were an impressive 41 season-best performances by the Madison team by Emma Sheeleigh, Audrey Rowland, Dylan Sharon, Matthew Carey, Tim Koppenol, Andrew Shinn, Uro Lyi, Michelle Catao, Luke Bias, D.J. Wilson, Christopher Walsh, Cameron O’ Connor, and Jaron Cole.

Season Re-cap:

Madison began this year with 101 children, 54 of whom were in their first year participating in Track & Field, and strung together an undefeated regular season with Dual Meet victories over Dover, Jefferson, Mountain Lakes, Hopatcong, Long Valley, Rockaway, and Chester. The highlight of the season came on May 15, when Madison knocked off previously undefeated and eventual Morris County Champion Rockaway by the score of 218-190.

Individual highlights:

Helene Rowland broke her own Madison program shot put record multiple times and won the Morris County Championship for the fourth consecutive year.

Laurel Carey broke the Madison program record for 9-10 year old girls in the 800 meters and captured two individual Morris County Championships.

Sawyer Tadano went undefeated during the regular season while winning at least once in all five running distances (100, 200, 400, 800, Mile) and captured his third individual Morris County Championship over a two-year period.

Michael Quinn earned his third individual Morris County Championship title in two years and continued a streak of 29 consecutive first-place finishes in running events over the same period.

Connor Riley capped his final season in the program by placing in the Top 3 in every event, highlighted by his Morris County title in the mile.

Quinn Heyrich, in his first year in the program, captured the 400 Meter Morris County Championship.

In what was a complete team effort, over 90% of the team “placed” in the top 3 in an event during the season. Strong performances were turned in by Ava Ciriello, Sam Anderson, Robbie Chalker, Will Henderson, Tom Hughes, Neil Petrosino, Emily Chopoorian, Anouk Geenen, Carolyn Glynn, Erin Salko, Vivien Sherman, Audrey Tolbert, Lucia Uribe, Annabelle van der Hulst, Miles Bird, Matthew Bradley, Nathanael Erickson, Brendan Geier, Tyler Graham, Jake Griffie, Billy Hughes, Jonah Lawson, Tom Neville, Atharva Talpade, Jeffrey Witte, Grace Bradley, Marina Hoyt, Grace Hughes, Elizabeth Napoli, Allison Nevias, Mamie Tadano, Julia Tully, Anthony Allocca, Iain Bagnall, Joe Branch, James Ciriello, Gabriel Benhaim- Killian, James Ottomanelli, Ian Stokes, Alex Stourton, Nicolas Uribe, Matthew Vaughan, and Nicholas Walsh.

The following Eighth Grade individuals admirably led the team and completed their final seasons in the Madison Youth Track & Field program and will now “graduate” into the High School ranks: Rose Ciriello, Emily Fritze, Caroline Hargrave, Denny Harrington, Quinn Heyrich, Libby Johnson, Carrie Klein, Tim Koppenol, Claire McCafferty, Connor Riley, Audrey Rowland, Helene Rowland, Emma Sheeleigh, Emma Stechschulte, and Georgia Turvey.
