I find the idea that Madison has its own electric company fascinating, never knew that until I started digging around as to why I couldn't see Madison on JCP&L or PSE&G's maps.

I assume that the city still relies on JCP&L to provide power up to a certain point and then just handles the distribution within the city... How are your rates? How are repair times in comparison? 5 days out from now does not sound worse than say, what JCP&L is quoting for Morris Township or Chatham.

The borough claims 80% have power. Rest are serious issues that need to be handled case by case. Still a fair number of utility polls to be replaced.

I think Madison Electric does a fantastic job and the rates are probably lower than JCPL or PSEG.

JCP&L handles our main feeder lines but we have our own substation.

The percentage of residents restored in Madison has far exceeded the rates in other Morris County towns. Great work guys and gals.

Yes, not only does Madison Electric (and water) do a better job at servicing its customers, their rates are either on par or lower than PSEG or JCPL. And, whatever surplus the utility does generate is given back to the town, which helps to keep taxes in check. It's a win-win.

I'd like to see some of the surplus money go toward moving Madison from a pure distributor of electric to an electric generator. I'm talkin' solar panels. If every business, every borough building and parking lot, every school, and every house and telephone pole with reasonable sun exposure, had solar panels that fed directly into the grid, Madison would have HAD power during the day over the last week. It would help to decrease the summer surcharge spikes, and it would make us less susceptible to market forces dictating the surplus fund.

Then, to reduce dependence on outside generation further, replace every single borough telephone pole light with an LED bulb. They're way better looking than the orange glow lights, and they use way less electricity.

The upfront costs are a lot, but I believe the long term benefits will pay huge dividends - especially as the energy market becomes more volatile.

Cedar Avenure and that neighborhood is still without power, and no one is working there to restore electricity...How long will it take to fix the problem there?
