Playwrights Theatre Reveals Part of its Next Season

Recent production of "Two Jews Walk Into A War ..." will be performed in upstate N.Y. in June.

Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey has announced two of the three shows that will make up its next season.

The first, "Lost Boy Found In Whole Foods," will be a co-production with Premiere Stages, based at Kean University in Union, and will be performed only at the theater at Kean in September.

Playwrights Theatre artistic director John Pietrowski said the decision to stage the play only in one place was prompted by recent funding cuts.

The play, by Tammy Ryan, was part of Playwrights Theatre's Forum reading series last fall. It tells the story of Christine, a middle-aged, middle-class white woman, who meets Gabriel, a former "Lost Boy" working in the produce section of a Whole Foods store in Pittsburgh. The "Lost Boys" were survivors of a civil war in Sudan in the 1990s who found their way to refugee camps in Kenya, then were resettled in the United States in 2001. Once she learns his background, Christine invites Gabriel to live with her and her teenage daughter.

Ryan also has written "A Confluence of Dreaming," a finalist for the 2008 Julie Harris Playwriting Award: "The Music Lesson" and "Dark Part of the Forest."

In October, "Mom: The Musical" will be staged at Playwrights Theatre in Madison. It is about six "soccer moms" who form a rock band to play at a high school benefit, then become famous.

"Two Jews Walk Into a War … ," which was produced at Playwrights Theatre earlier this year, will be done with the same cast, including Pietrowski, at Shadowland Theatre in Ellenville, N.Y., in June and next spring in Philadelphia.
