Oregon Trail Drama to Conclude Playwrights' Season

Play about teens on frontier in 1847 is a co-production with Growing Stage.

A drama about two teen-age girls traveling on the Oregon trail in 1847 will conclude Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey's upcoming season.

The play, "Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie," by Julie Jensen, will be presented Nov. 4 through Nov. 21 at the Madison theater.  It will be produced in association with the Growing Stage in Netcong, which will take the production on tour next spring.

"Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie," which was commissioned by the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., is based on the novel by Kristiana Gregory and is suitable for children age 8 and older.

Playwrights previously said its first two shows of the season would be "Lost Boy Found in Whole Foods," by Tammy Ryan, and "MoM: A Rock Concert Musical," with book, lyrics and music by Richard Caliban.

The former, a co-production with Premiere Stages, will be presented only at that company's theater at Kean University in Union from Sept. 2 through Sept. 19. The latter will be in Madison from Sept. 30 through Oct. 24.

This is Playwrights' last season at the Green Village Road location, where it has been for two decades, because the town plans to sell the former school building. The theater is looking for a new location.

Season subscriptions are $60, while single tickets cost $25 for adults, $22.50 for seniors and $15 for students.

Playwrights also will present its Forum series--staged readings of 13 new plays in three weeks--from Nov. 30 through Dec. 18. Individual readings are $10, while a Forun Pass for the series is $25.  Season subscribers receive a Forum Pass as part of their subscription.

"Lost Boy Found in Whole Foods" was part of the Forum series last fall.

"As we enter our 25th season of presenting new work and encouraging the creative process for students of all ages, we continue our innovative partnerships with other New Jersey theatres," said John Pietrowski, Playwrights' artistic director.

Playwrights has done a previous co-production with the Growing Stage and has sponsored the New Jersey Young Playwrights Contest with Premiere Stages for the past several years.
