Update: Campaign Signs Go Missing in Madison

Obama and Romney supporters in the borough say they have had signs disappear.

With less than two weeks left until the Nov. 6 election, instances of theft and vandalism involving campaign signs have been reported around the U.S.—including in Madison.

Some signs supporting President Obama and Mitt Romney reportedly went missing from Madison lawns recently.

Madison resident Tracy Young told the Huffington Post she woke to find her Obama sign was gone, and later learned hers wasn't the only one. She said she replaced her sign, and did not initially call police because she did not think it would do any good.

David Arthur, a member of the Madison Board of Education, said in a comment Thursday at least two Romney signs, including his, were stolen in the Fairwoods section of Madison, and Cary Miller said in a comment his Astri Baillie sign also vanished.

Obama signs also have been vandalized in Basking Ridge, where a sign reportedly was ripped up and placed in a resident's mailbox, as well as Ohio and Wisconsin, according to the Huffington Post report.

The report says a Baristanet post shows a Montclair resident whose Romney signs were stolen ended up posting a flier saying the sign thefts would only help Romney by leading the resident to buy another sign and donate $50 to Romney's campaign.

And here I thought I was the only one to have my Obama sign stolen. Having worked on political campaigns for years I was shocked that someone would come onto my property to steal a campaign sign. Thankfully the President doesn't need Madison to carry New Jersey....

How about the Romney/Ryan signs that have have been stolen from the Fairwoods section. This actually happened to at least 2 houses...one of them mine. ThIs seems to be happening on both sides of the political isle.
Funny how the article 'headline' is about Madison...but never mentions anyone in Madison...and then jumps to the conclusion that it must be Romney supporters...cut me a break. I thought this was suppose to be about signs being stolen in Madison.... does Patch think they are the New York Times? This article was a hack job and shouldn't have been posted.
Thankfully Romney has strong support here in Madison.

David, I appreciate what you're saying, thank you. Your comment also is the first I've seen or heard about the missing Romney signs in the Fairwoods section and have incorporated that information into the article as well. Jake Remaly, 973-452-1013

Who cares about the signs... I vote the candidates go missing and they bring back Reagan who was the only person who had what it took to be president in my lifetime so far.

Good point...perhaps this should be a post for suggestion the people have for improving government...like for every law they pass...they need to get rid of two old ones.

My takeaway from this is, call the Huffington Post when you're robbed! After all, Tracy didn't think calling the MPD would do any good, but I'm betting Ariana sent her patrol cars right over.

Publicity seeking, needy, self-important shill.

No matter who you do or don't support, removing any signs from someone else's property is a disgrace. People who do such things may think they are aiding their candidate of choice, but they are in fact showing contempt for the greatest electoral system the world has ever seen, and one that so many men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve.

Romney sign was taken off my property last weekend as well. What a loss of respect for private property.

Classify this under "not news". In my, admittedly very limited experience, Rep signs go missing a little more than Dem -- only because the demographic of people who will steal signs (young people) matches more with the Dem demographic. But it happens both sides to be sure -- every election year.

My neighbor wanted us to get her a Romny sign, but her husband wasn't on board and gave it back to us. I put it near the road in front of Shop Rite and a week later all that is left is the sign holder.

Drunk kids destroyed CHS's cougar... Probably the same people doing this. Where are the police? These people can't be invisible...
