McIlroy, Madison Family Picture Perfect at U.S. Open Golf

Is that golf's newest sensation, or the kid who sits at my son's lunch table?

It was a Father's Day meeting of dads and their champion sons as a Madison family got the thrill of a golfing lifetime when they ran into new U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy just hours after his record-breaking performance at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.

Steve Wells and sons, Andrew and David, and friend George Hayman of Madison drove down Saturday morning to catch the final two rounds of the tournament, and happened to stay at the same hotel as many of the players, including McIlroy.

The 22-year-old Irishman ran away from the field to become the youngest Open champion in 88 years, then headed back to the hotel bar late Sunday with his father, Gerry, and entourage for a celebratory nightcap.

Despite the midnight hour a gracious McIlroy signed autographs and posed for a portrait of champions with the Wells boys; Andrew, a junior at Madison High School, won the state Group 1 & 2 combined in May, while he and his  teammates captured the team sectional crown. His younger brother, David, plans to play as a freshman at MHS next year.
