May Day's Upon Us; After-Party Planned

Want to spruce up Madison? Register at 8 a.m. Saturday and bring your gardening gear.

The 15th Annual Rose City May Day is scheduled for Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.

More than 900 volunteers are expected to mulch, weed and otherwise beautify more than 40 locations in Madison during the event. Volunteers are still needed and can meet at the at 8 a.m. to register. T-shirts are given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mara Johnson, chairperson for the event, said Assistant Borough Administrator Jim Burnet started the event. Board of Education President Lisa Ellis coordinates the volunteers, she said.

At 11 a.m., an after-party with free food and beverages is scheduled to start at  the , Johnson said. As a fundraiser for the DDC, parents can purchase a souvenir mug or glass for $15 and enjoy a wine and beer tasting, Johnson said. The entire community is invited.

Residents are advised to bring their own gardening tools, rakes and wheelbarrows, though there will be equipment available. Arbor Day activities also are scheduled for 9 a.m. at Hartley Dodge.

May Day "fosters pride, volunteerism and community spirit and promotes the need for shared responsibility in beautifying and maintaining our town," the DDC's website says.
