Madison Football Captures Third Straight State Title
Dodgers' unbeaten streak continues as team shuts out Mountain Lakes.
The Madison High football team won its third straight state title with a 13-0 victory over Mountain Lakes in the North Jersey Section 2, Group 2 championship Saturday morning at Kean University.
The Dodgers scored both of their touchdowns in the second quarter with a Justin Goodwin rushing score followed by Goodwin finding Joey Geyer through the air.
"It was a great game," Madison's Shone Register said. "Mountain Lakes fought hard. We came out on top. We wanted the seniors wanted to go out undefeated not losing a game in high school and we did it."
The Dodgers recorded their 37th straight win as Goodwin opened the scoring when he took the ball to the outside and ran for a 43-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
In the following series, Mountain Lakes turned the ball over on a fumble. It took less than a minute for the Dodgers to score their second touchdown on a pass when Goodwin threw a 20-yard strike to Joey Geyer in the end zone. Mountain Lakes blocked the extra point and the score was 13-0.
That would be all the scoring from either team as the defenses took over.
Goodwin finished the day with 124 rushing yards on 17 carries and a rushing and throwing touchdown.
"They (Moutain Lakes) were outstanding today, they have a lot to be proud of," Madison head coach Chris Kubik said. "They are a great football team. They were undefeated and in the state finals for a reason. You just saw two great programs going after it and I am just glad we are on top. We wanted to be 12-0. That is what is all about to us."
Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated Carson Lassiter threw Madison's touchdown pass.
