Breaking down the election

In 2008, the majority of Madison voters chose a Democratic candidate for president, according to the New Jersey Department of State. In the township, 4,038 voters chose Barack Obama and 3,656 voters chose John McCain. New Jersey, overall, has favored a Democratic candidate in the past five presidential elections.

In the race for President of the United States, influential New Jersey political insiders say Republicans may benefit from a projected down voter turnout after Tropical Storm Sandy left much of the state without power through Tuesday.

According to surveys issued to political officials and influencers Monday, respondents from both sides of the aisle believe the storm will have an impact on how many voters head to the polls to vote in the general election.
