Bloody Bagels Served in School Cafeteria Spark Concerns

Madison food service provider fired an employee after students purchased food that should not have been served.

MADISON, NJ -- At least two elementary school students who bought lunch from the Central Avenue School cafeteria two weeks ago purchased bagels that had a cafeteria employee's blood on them.

A co-president of the school's parent-teacher organization said the incident needs to be addressed by officials in writing so parents know exactly what happened.

Mark Vidovich, president of Pomptonian Food Service, the company that provides food services for the district, said during Tuesday's Madison Board of Education meeting an employee who was with the company for 14 years cut her hand while slicing bagels, continued working and never reported the accident to anyone, which violated sanitation training and common sense.

The employee was immediately fired, and Vidovich said she voluntarily agreed to a blood test when he told her parents were apprehensive.

While he still was waiting for forms to be sent allowing the blood test results to be shared directly with the Madison school district, he said in response to a question from a school board attorney that Pomptonian, after seeing the results Tuesday, would not be advising the district to take any action to notify parents about health concerns in light of anything in the results.

"I don't have any concerns, and I'm a very paranoid parent myself," Vidovich said, adding that he once went through a situation where someone agreed to have a blood test after there were concerns his son was exposed to blood.

Approximately 18 bagels were sold at Central Avenue School on Wednesday, Jan. 9, that could have been affected by the cutting incident, Vidovich said. Two students brought their bagels to the attention of adults in the lunchroom. Another 10 bagels that had not been served, which did not appear to have blood on them, were pulled from the cafeteria once it was determined what happened, Vidovich said. It was not known whether the other 16 bagels that were purchased had blood on them.

Vidovich said the former employee had a complete lapse in judgment and feels awful about what happened.

Central Avenue School PTO Co-President Jennifer Groller said more than a dozen parents met with Pomptonian staff on Tuesday. She credited the company with being "very forthright, very apologetic and they're very much wanting to fix this and fix our past issues."

Among the other issues, parents have been working with Pomptonian to ensure there are enough meals for students, and healthy options and healthy eating habits are encouraged.

Groller told the board Pomptonian or the district needs to spell out to parents what happened with the cutting incident and how it was and is being addressed, which Superintendent Dr. Michael Rossi said he could do.

She said addressing it in writing could prevent "urban legends" from spreading. Parents are finding out about what happened at different times, emailing her about their concerns in waves, and some are boycotting the cafeteria, she said.

Vidovich said the bagels come from Noah's Bagels and typically come pre-sliced, but they did not arrive sliced that day. The cafeteria has a bagel guillotine, but the employee did not use it, he said.

I understand the concern, but you didn't have to go and fire her.. with the lack of jobs out there and her being with the company for 14 years... yes she did wrong . but have some heart..

You can hire her to prepare meals for your family but I will pack a lunch from home for my children. If a bloody bagel can make it out of the kitchen w/o anyone noticing, I don't want my children eating meals that the food service prepares. The employee's lack of good judgement makes me wonder if she washed her hands after she sneezed, coughed or used the restroom.

Nobody cares (employers, I mean). There are so many people without jobs, they can find someone to replace her in a second (and prob even pay them less, too). They just don't care and would rather her than face lawsuits from parents or the school.

I am sure if they were unionized, things would have happened differently. Employees have no rights anymore.

The woman had been in the food service industry for 14 years, then why didn't she take the appropriate action when she cut herself? She knew that not reporting the incident and allowing bloody bagels to be distributed was a risk- anyone with common sense would. If I were her boss I would have done the same thing. What if she was sick and sneezed or coughed all over the food being sent out to the schools? The employee proved herself untrustable.

Rights?! Guess we missed the section of the US Constitution that guarantees a food service employee the right to bleed on children's bagels. Could you let us know which part of the Bill of Rights provides that freedom?

How naive are you? Are you really attempting to appear compassionate for an employee you feel was wrongfully terminated without comprehending the incredible risk she put all those children under? You say you have some heart, and you understand the concern--I doubt it very much. You seem underequipped to realize the potential for spreading a blood borne pathogen this incident represents.

Another post suggests the school administration was uncaring. Don't be stupid. It isn't just litigation that prompted this action. Tell me: which blood borne pathogen would you want your child(ren) exposed to. Any food service employee of 14 years tenure knows better than to contaminate foodstuffs with personal bodily fluids. And any employee realizing that jobs are scarce should remember what they were taught about zero tolerance misconduct.

Maybe the company put so much pressure on these employees she never stopped working for fear of being fired? Ever think of that? You get hurt at work nowadays and you get fired. Pressure to be extra fast also probably contributed to this happening.

John Dunphy, just to clarify in case YOU did not see in the article, no where does it mention her blood results were "fine." It says he would not be concerned with telling the parents to take action.
However HIV can be present without being detected, so tell me, would you eat food that was bloody? If you were in a restaurant and served bloody food would you just be like oh get a blood test....youre fine, ok, no big deal. Heck no, you would probably be telling the manager to fire the employee as well, so how is this different because it was kids in a school?

The real question is not whether or not she should have been fired, she should have. She made a major blunder and got caught. She risked the welfare of children.

The real question is how many other things happen that we don't know about in this and any other establishments that serve food. I do not eat out frequently because of these incidents. I worked in a food establishment and had friends that did as well. The stuff they do is disgusting. Dropped food, gets rinsed and reused. Butter get reformed and served. Milk get served way past expiration date. Meat and other perishables gets left sitting out for hours.

There are not hidden cameras back in the kitchen watching everything that is done and the main purpose of a food establishment is to make money, not serve you.

i don't understand how everyone is saying she put the children under risk. YOU and all the parents don't know that she didn't have a blood disease. but, she would know if she didn't. so, maybe she made that choice knowing she would get fired for throwing the bagels away, but knowing full aware that she wouldn't cause HIV or Hepatitis for someone. Every restaurant and food prep in the country has problems. you would never eat out again if you saw what happened in the kitchen. even if you fire everyone and start over you will get the same problems. so, what is the solution?

As a kid who has been eating the school food everyday since first grade, Pomptonian has always had a problem with sanitation and the freshness of food. Once when I bought mozzarella sticks, the bread included had fuzzy green mold on it. It is not uncommon, even now, for the milk they serve to be expired. When I was in elementary school, I frequently had to pick hairs out of my food because the lunch ladies usually did not wear hairnets. On the other hand, the staff they employ is overall spectacular. Many of the workers are moms of Madison kids, and nearly all of them bother to ask you how your day is going instead of just asking you what you want to eat. However, the lady should have confessed the accident immediately and thrown away the bagels, not endanger the welfare of the kids which her carelessness.

MOST KITCHENS, BOTH AT HOME AND IN PUBLIC ARE HORROR SHOWS
Tragically, irresponsible behavior such as this is typical and quite rampant in food service. It’s a combination of poor training, apathy and absence of code enforcement. If people knew the unsanitary and dangerous practices that occur routinely in most restaurant kitchens, they would never eat out. There are very few restaurants in Morris County that practice proper sanitation. And a large part of that problem is the lack of health inspectors to enforce the rules, ridiculous as that is. When it comes to proper handling and preparation of food, most people behave moronically. The things I have witnessed during many years in food service would turn your stomach. Someone should do a hidden camera tour of the area’s restaurant kitchens to document the horror. So, be warned; never trust anyone other than your mom to prepare your meals.

All due respect of course but, a few people are concerned about the job this employee had for 14 years, that being said, shouldn't she have known that passing those bagels were wrong? She should have made her accident known and those bagels should have immediately been removed. I have 4 grown children and if that had happened to them, I would have been beside myself with worry. When working in the food industry, you have an obligation to the people you supply the food to and cleanliness is, by far, the most important. Sadly, today there are many employees, not only in the food industry but in just about any given field, that just don't take pride in their job performance anymore.

Was there only one blood test done on the woman who cut her hand? And it was negative? That doesn't mean she has none of the diseases that can be transmitted by blood. When blood exposure occurs, customarily one test of the potential infecter is done at the time of exposure and another done 6 months later. Until the second test is negative, no one can relax.

How can you cut yourself, know you did, know you are getting blood on the food and continue to work as if nothing happened? Like the article says, common sense was not used here. The cafeteria managers get crazy if you have an accident! You have to fill out an incident report and then the company running the cafeteria (I worked for Marriott) has a fit because instead of going 100-something days without an accident, now it's 5 days. This cafeteria worker probably didn't think the cut was that bad. In the kitchen I worked in, we used to have students help out...until a kid got burned really bad on the door to the convection oven. Then to make matters worse, the manager didn't know the proper procedure to treat a burn. She sprayed Solarcaine on it! If you get burned on a hot oven...flush the area for 15 MINUTES with cool tap water- NEVER ice and NEVER spray anything on it. NO butter, NO ointment. When you get a burn, the layers of skin underneath are literally cooking, so you have to flush the area with cool water.

They did what was right. No one ones what she has. To me it also sounds like she was not wearing gloves. Working in food service is MANDIDTORY of wearing gloves around food.

No excuse for what she did...what else has she done or any of the other food preppers...blood borne diseases are serious...she should have been fired whether she worked 14 hrs or 14 years...there is a reason for health inspectors.

If we all knew exactly what happens to food items prepared in restaurants, buffet lines, fast food businesses, frozen dinners we buy in stores, etc......WE'D ALL STOP EATING ANYTHING WE DIDN'T GROW, HARVEST, AND PREPARE OURSELVES. Just because we don't see all the stuff that goes on in our food chain, doesn't mean this and other contamination doesn't happen. I've worked restaurants in the past, and I'm saying this in all honesty. If you're thinking that most people preparing our food are conscientious, think again. It isn't that most of them intentionally contaminate what we eat, but a good amount of them are careless and won't report something stupid they have done or they've seen someone else do. Then, there are those who do intentionally contribute to this problem just for the satisfaction of knowing they've gotten away with something disgusting. Bon Appetite everyone!

You're absolutely correct....some of these parents are so naive it's laughable. Maybe if we arm the food service managers this will never happen again!!.....and then parents will completely overreact to the next anomaly that occurs.

You are excusing and overlooking negligence because it happens everywhere? If you don't think safety and health concerns should be enforced to protect children, where DO you draw the line? When it's your child that contracts hepatitis? I can guarantee you that the fired employee, if she finds future employment as a food handler, will show reasonable care going forward as a result of being held accountable. A cavalier disregard for the welfare of others will quickly change when it hits your home.

Bagels are only flour dough that's been boiled then baked. Not very nutritious food and very high in carbohydrates. Yuk

You are so right, Rosa! Flour is poison. I lost 150 pounds in 2 years by giving up all forms of flour and sugar and walking one hour daily------even at age 62 and on synthroid with severe hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)!

The first thing I would have done is had my own child tested regardless of whether I was assured that the woman was tested. As a 14 year employee, she should have known better. She deserves to be fired even if she has difficulty finding another job, that's her problem.

I'm surprised those kids in Madison had to wait in a line for food. Don't they have waiters and waitresses to bring them their meals. What is the world coming to? Poor little silver spoons.

First time she was *caught*. All she had to do was stop, report it, and everything's fine. But no, keep cutting.
