Get Out: Young Playwrights, Psychedelic Band, More

Plenty to do in and around Madison through the weekend.

 

Live music on St. Patrick's Day at Poor Herbie's, a show by the "last of the psychedelic jug bands" at Studio Yoga, a free lecture on floral arrangements and tablescapes at the Madison Area YMCA and, at Madison Junior School, productions of five plays written by Madison students are among the events scheduled through the weekend.

Spanish/Bilingual Storytime
When/Where:
Thursday at 10:30 a.m., Madison Public Library, 39 Keep Street, Madison
Why Go:
Stories and songs in Spanish for children up to age 6.

Rocco's Buzztime Triva Night
When/Where:  Thursday at 9 p.m., Rocco's Tuscany Bar and Grill, 30 Cook Plaza, Madison
Why Go: To show off how smart you are.
Cost: Two drink minimum (sodas OK)

Walk on the Wild Side at Duke Farms
When/Where: Friday at 6 a.m. at Duke Farms on Route 206 in Hillsborough.
Why Go: To explore nature through a 1.25-mile trail and look at some of the landscape created by J.B. Duke.
Cost: Free.

Public Speaking Class at B.I.G. Meeting for Women
When/Where: Friday at 10 a.m., Doodlebugz, 55 Main Street, Madison
Why Go: Sims Wyeth teaches how to connect with listeners.
Cost: Free to members and first-time attendees.

Friday Fun with Miss Carol
When/Where:
Friday at 10 a.m., Madison Public Library, 39 Keep Street, Madison
Why Go: Songs, music and dancing for kids 2 and up.
Cost: Free.

Lucky Leprechaun Day
When/Where:
Friday at 3 p.m., Museum of Early Trades & Crafts, 9 Main Street, Madison
Why Go:
To learn Irish history, join in crafts and activities, and enjoy refreshments. Ages 5 to 10.
Cost: $3 for participants. Regular admission for others.

School of Rock Performs with La Guns
When/Where: Friday, 5 p.m., School of Rock Chatham, 60 Main St, Chatham
Why go: See the best musicians Chatham has to offer, with special guests La Guns.
Price: $15

Big Apple Circus
When/Where: Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark, Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Why Go: To see the circus's "Dream Big" show, complete with acrobats, trapeze flyers, a juggler and much more.
Cost: $20.

The Shroud of Turin: Myth or Miracle?
When/Where:
Friday at 7 p.m., St. Paul Inside the Walls, 205 Madison Ave., Madison
Why Go: Examine facts about the Shroud of Turin with Jewish Shroud Expert Barrie M. Schwortz, founder of The Shroud of Turin Education and Research Association.
Cost: $10

"The Grapes of Wrath" at Chatham Playhouse
When/Where: 23 N Passaic Ave, Chatham, Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m.
Why go: See this quintessentially American story acted out by the Chatham Community Players on closing weekend.
Price: $20.

26th Annual Madison Young Playwrights Festival
When/Where:
Saturday at 1 p.m., Madison Junior School, 160 Main Street, Madison
Why Go: Five plays by young writers will be presented with professional actors.
Cost: $10 for adults, $5 for students

Sunset Kirtan with Laksmi Nrsimha das
When/Where:
Saturday at 5:30 p.m., Studio Yoga, 2 Green Village Road, Madison
Why Go: To experience the yoga of voice with a husband and wife who have been practicing for 40 years.
Cost: $10

St. Patrick's Day Dinner
When/Where: 7:30 p.m., Saturday, St. Patrick Church, 41 Oliver St., Chatham
Why go: Because where better to celebrate this saint than at the church named for him?
Price: $40

Lenten Speaker Series

Why Go: Madison resident Dr. Vivian Bull will speak about South Sudan Health Empowering All Lives (Sudan HEAL)

Wizards, Witches and Wonder

Sunday at 2 p.m., Museum of Early Trades & Crafts, 9 Main Street, Madison
Why Go: Dress up and bring your wand to the museum for enchanting activities, games and crafts for children ages 5 to 10.
Cost: $3 for participants. Regular admission for others.

Green Light Performance Series: Allamuchy Sheiks Jug Band
When/Where:
Sunday at 3 p.m., Studio Yoga, 2 Green Village Road, Madison
Why Go: To listen to the “last of the psychedelic jug bands,” featuring guitars, banjos, fiddles, mandolins, harmonicas, bass, kazoo and washboard.
Cost: $10 ($7 in advance)

Inspirational Flower Arrangements and Tablescapes

Sunday at 3 p.m., Madison Area YMCA, 111 Kings Road, Madison
Why Go: Laura Clare is lecturing as part of the Garden Club of Madison's Tributes Series.

Chatham Community Band Children's Concert
When/Where: Chatham Middle School, 480 Main St, Chatham, Sunday, 4 p.m.
Why go: Because children's favorites just don't get any better.
