Doodlebugz Celebrates Opening of Kids Boutique

Saturday event features face-painting, cupcakes, balloons, giveaways and more.

Kids' boutique Doodlebugz is scheduled to celebrate its Grand Opening on May 7 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. and welcomes patrons to stop by for free face-painting, cupcakes, balloons, giveaways and more.

The retailer at 55 Main Street specializes in personalized children’s toys and furnishings, and is also home to Studio BeadBugz, a beading and craft design studio for play dates, events or private birthday parties.

The store/studio is the brainchild of Madison resident and owner Jacquie Dinsmore. "We thought there was a lack of things for kids to do in town, that there was an opportunity for a new concept," Dinsmore said in an interview. "This is a kids' store, a place that is kid-friendly. We encourage kids to touch; we didn't want parents to worry about that."

The 2,500-square-foot store is bright and spacious, with ample room that isn't jammed to the walls with merchandise. "We tried to create an atmosphere that was open and easy to get around," said Dinsmore, who pushed a double-wide stroller around to test clearances. Instead of carpet there are easy-to-clean floors, "so the store will always look as fresh later as it does on opening day."

In the back, an activity area hosts beading and other craft works. Parents can watch their little ones and get off their feet thanks to a pair of leather couches set against one wall. Dads will appreciate a big screen TV for watching football games during weekend parties. Next door, a large 2,800-foot space will host The Studio, with two additional craft studios and a parent lounge; a summer opening is planned.

Kristen Schuster, a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University, is the boutique's resident artist and helped design the interior.

"It was a large leap of faith, taking this space," said Dinsmore, who operated her own executive recruiting firm for 10 years until she sold it in 2008. "People thought it was an eyesore. We planned this for a long time, and believed that a Main Street address would be helpful in promoting the business, because it's very visible."

A key part of the business plan is community outreach. Doodlebugz is hosting an Eighth Grade Dance Jewelry event where eighth graders can make jewelry for their upcoming dance. The retailer Doodlebugz has agreed to donate 10% of proceeds from this event to the PTO at Madison Junior School. "It's not enough to hand out coupons for 10% off," Dinsmore said. "You have to show potential customers that you are giving back to the community in a way that is meaningful."

Fo walk-in business, Doodlebugz has set a single price per piece, with no extras or add-on costs, typically $25 for a bracelet/necklace; $18 for a bookmark or keychain, and $12 for earrings.

"We want to be a destination here in Madison," Dinsmore said. "People are always looking to do something new and different."
