The Madison High School wrestling team saw three Dodgers place in the top four at Saturday’s Morris County Tournament held at Mount Olive High School.
Leading the way for Madison was junior Patsy Davis, who took home a silver medal at 119 pounds.
Davis, who won the MCT at 103 pounds in 2010, rolled to his second straight finals appearance with wins over Parsippany’s Ameen Jafferie of Parsippany, Dylan Mulcahy of Chatham and Jefferson’s Pat Healy, before facing Nick Anderson of Delbarton in the finals.
Davis’ finals match was a tight one as the junior battled to a 2-1 loss in a match that was scoreless heading into the third period.
While Davis was in control of his opponent on their feet, controlling the pace and executing strong head snaps, he was unable to record a takedown in period one. And after being ridden out for the entire second period, Davis found himself starting the final frame on top.
Anderson would score a reversal with less than 30 seconds remaining in the period, and the hard-fought win.
“Patsy fell short of his goal of defending his title (from 2010),” Madison head coach Steve Healey said, “but there’s still a lot of wrestling left to do and we just need to improve and get better down the road.”
Madison senior Ed Carr (160 pounds) finished the tournament in third place as he stopped Delbarton’s Kurt Ferdenzi in the consolation round.
Carr, who recorded wins over Morris Hills senior Chris Acevedo and Jefferson’s Brandon Coveney, found himself wrestling in the consolation round after losing to Mendham’s Ryan Harrington, who would go on to win the tournament at 160 pounds.
“I feel good,” Carr said after winning his consolation match. “It’s a tough weight class all around and I really couldn’t get to Harrington [in the semis], but I’m happy with third. It was a big match for me. I’ve never placed in a tournament that was as big as this one, so I really wanted to get it.”
Also placing was Madison senior heavyweight Mike Boardman, who finished in fourth place after dropping a consolation round match to Pequannock’s Mike Spencer.
“I think he was anticipating getting into the finals but he just didn’t have it today,” Healey said. “Placing fourth is nice, it’s a good accomplishment. He has to rebound from that [loss]. It’s not a region tournament, it’s a county tournament. So it’s not going to hurt him [going forward].”
Madison would finish out of the Top 10 in the overall team standings.
Delbarton took home the overall title for the third straight year with 206 points, followed by Montville (160), Boonton (132), Pequannock (127) and Jefferson (124).
