Chester Couple Leads LAX FOR THE CURE Lacrosse Tournament to Raise Funds—and Awareness—for Two New Jersey Susan G. Komen for the Cure Affiliates
Over 56 girls’ lacrosse teams from the Northeast and beyond converged to participate in last Fall’s LAX FOR THE CURE event, held November 12-13 at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ. The event raised over $58,000 for the New Jersey Affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. LAX FOR THE CURE was the initial concept of Chester resident Jessica Shoulberg, Mendham High School Coach, Director of STEPS Lacrosse, and Director of the LAX BY THE SEA tournament. During the summer of 2007, the STEPS Lacrosse club had three mothers fighting breast cancer. Jessica’s concept came from the notion that with the growth of girls’ lacrosse and summer tournament circuit, an opportunity presented itself to start a tournament that would meet the ideals of players, parents, clubs and college coaches. The goal was to ultimately find a way to raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. She founded, and oversees, LAX for the CURE with her husband, Charlie Shoulberg, who is the founder of STEPS Lacrosse, the Assistant GM Men’s US National Team, and Director of the LAX BY THE SEA tournament. Since its inception in 2008, LAX FOR THE CURE has raised over $764,400 for North Jersey (Summit) and Central/South Jersey (Lawrenceville) Affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The next LAX FOR THE CURE tournamet will be held on July 6-7-8 2012. For more information, visit http://www.laxforthecure.com/index.html.
